This is my favorite season. Nippy nights and cool days get me pulling out favorite sweaters and socks, and looking at the sky, day and night. Weather fronts offer the most unusual clouds. I saw some today that looked like my father's eyebrows, which resembled overgrown plumose antennae of moths.
Gardening makes you stupid. Or at least crazy. Well, I guess I can only speak for myself; but, based on empirical data and decades of observation, I can say with at least moderate certainty that gardening makes me stupid. And crazy.
Signs of the approaching cool weather are everywhere. The Camellia sasanquas are blooming, the bees and butterflies are plentiful and the mornings have been chilly enough to make me break out the sweaters. Surely we will have many mild and sunny days to come but just to err on the side of caution, it's time to put the garden to bed.
Would you just look at that mess? Some doofus has taken that whole wheelbarrow full of gorgeous newly-made potting mix and moved it out under the eaves of the potting shed.
It's the same old song; gardening is always cyclical. With slight variances for weather, what happened or bloomed last September is likely to be happening again. I checked back to see what I had written about this time last year. The article was called "The Unwanted Guests" and it was about deer.
