Recent stories of teachers going out of their way to insure students can continue learning as they shelter in place prompt me to reflect on the important role teachers have played in my life. One individual, George Brooks, stands out.
The Women’s Associationof Hilton Head Island Youth Community Service Award Program has been the organization’s most visible community effort since its inception. The Award began in 1980 as a way to recognize and encourage local students. Now in its 40thyear, the Program has recognized over 100 deserving students and awarded thousands of dollars.
In spite of the incredible spring weather we have had, jasmine in full bloom, and the good fortune of living here, many Beaufortonians may be ready for a change. Here are a couple ideas that you may not have thought about; they provide opportunities for getting outside while maintaining social distancing and supporting home schooling efforts.
Many are afraid now. Do not demonize your fear, and also, do not let it rule you. Instead, let it speak to you—in your stillness, listen for its wisdom. What might it be telling you about what is at work, at issue, at risk, beyond the threats of personal inconvenience and illness? As the health of a tree, a river, the sky tells you about quality of your own health, what might the quality of your health tell you about the health of the rivers, the trees, the sky, and all of us who share this planet with you?
Local craftsmen for Lowcountry Habitat for Humanity create beautiful, handcrafted furniture for a good cause

Think you have to go to Charleston or High Point, N.C., for beautifully made, handcrafted outdoorfurniture? Think again.
A group of local craftsmen and women are turning out porch and patio pieces that are quickly becoming the envy of backyards and porches everywhere. Andthe best part of all? It’s for a good cause.
Called the Beaufort Collection, the furniture line is made exclusively by volunteers for LowCountry Habitat for Humanity.
Of course we know how fortunate we are. We are an already-retired, retiring couple, generally in good health, living in a comfortable home. We have sufficient income, nine mega-rolls of toilet paper and a portable bidet on the way. We live where we are able, without much difficulty, to take walks six feet away from neighbors we had already been avoiding.
